Nicholas and Lydia Gould

Nicholas Rodman Gould and Lydia Ann Wilson are my Great Great Grandparents. Nicholas was the son of Jonathan P. Gould and Sarah Smith Chappell. Lydia was the daughter of John Wilson and Lucy C. (Last Name unknown)

They were married on October 20, 1846.

Death of Nicholas R. Gould

Nicholas R. Gould died at his home on East street, Peace Dale, at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon after an illness of 10 days. His illness began with a gathering in his head and was followed by pneumonia. For the four days he been unconscious to those around him. He was in the eightieth year of his age. Mr. Gould was born January sixteenth, 1827, in the gambrel roof house owned by his father on the street leading to Rocky Brook church. He was a son of Jonathan Gould and Sarah Chappell Gould, his mother being a sister of the late Frederick Chappell of this town. He had resided in this town all his life with the exception of one year when he had charge of the carding at Yawgoo mill. He commenced working in Peace Dale mill when a boy and for thirty five years had charge of the spinning department, retiring from that position about twenty five years ago. For a number of yours he had lived quiet life. For although a man of strong physique he had been troubled with a weakness of the heart. He had resided in his present house since 1860. Although a man of strong convictions and not afraid to voice his opinions he was universally respected by all who knew him and his judgment on questions pertaining to local matters generally proved correct. He is survived by wife and five children. James B Gould, George A. Gould of Peace Dale, Herbert R. Gould of Providence, Frederick Gould and Mrs. Ray G Northup of Peace Dale. Six other children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Gould, one living until thirteen years old, the others dying younger. He leaves one sister, Mrs. Mary Matterson of Providence. The funeral was held from his late residence Thursday afternoon at two o’clock. Rev. J W Fobes officiating. The bearers were Arthur B Gould, George A Gould jr, Louis E. Gould, Fred F. Northup, Nicholas R. Gould, 3d, and Ernest Gould. The interment was in Oak Dell Cemetery . The service included selections by a quartette from the Peace Dale Congregational church. Mr. Gould was married October twentieth, 1846, to Lydia Ann Wilson, who is left to mourn his loss. Besides his children, Mr. Gould leaves twenty grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Death of Mrs. Lydia A. Gould

Mrs. Lydia A. Gould “fell asleep” at her home on East street, Friday morning, November thirtieth, in her eighty-ninth year. She was the widow of Nicholas R. Gould who died in 1906, and was born and had lived all her life in South Kingstown. She was a devoted wife and mother, and a woman of sterling character Although of a retiring disposition, she was ever ready to help those about her. She leaves one daughter, Mrs. Louisa G. Northup, who lived with her, and four sons, James B., George A., Herbert and Frederic. twenty grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs John Sherman of Narrow River, and Mrs. William Lawton of Hillsgrove.

The funeral services were held at her late home on Sunday afternoon, Rev. G. A. Ferguson of the Rocky Brook Advent church, officiating. The bearers were her four sons. “Worn out, tired, Longing for rest, Life’s forces spent, She sleeps well.”
