Ruth’s Diary

We had breakfast about 8:30 after a grand night’s sleep in a clean soft bed & a hot bath. In the morning we all trooped into the American Express to change money into French money, & to get mail. Whom should I run into but Prof. Colgan his wife, my Prof. of Educ. in Colby. He remembered me & we had a grand talk. I was elated for the rest of the day to think that after 10 years little insignificant me would be remembered. We, Helen, Dot, & I decided to splurge and had lunch at Fouquets on Champs Elysees for 31 francs – Italian ravioli & delicious pastry. After lunch we wandered on the side street & window shopped to get some idea of the prices before we bought. Helen bot a very pretty little blue dress for 75 fr – about $2.00 & I a sweet blouse for about the same. Another grand meal & then to the Tabarin – a very “swanky” night club with the most elaborate floor show. Our clothes for our evening out were amusing – Dot & I culottes – I in my new blouse, Helen in her $2. dress. Helen without stockings & Dot in sandals. It was beautiful. There was nothing vulgar in the lack of costume – the dancer portraying the snake in the garden of Eden & the one as the panther were exceptionally well done – also the soap suds tableau. We divided a bottle of champagne among us four Dot, Hell (sic) & I, & Frank – so it was quite a taste of night life.
