Ruth’s Diary

Our last day in Paris & our first chance to shop as Mon. & Tuesday were holidays. Helen & I walked down through the Latin Quarter past the Sorbonne & University of Paris, just looked in the Panthean. We found a little shop & Helen bot a hand knit dress for a niece & I some little suits for the nephews. We crossed the Seine by the Louvre & headed for the Madeleine, the shopping center. We went into the Trais (?) Quarters & I bot gloves. We then headed for the Am. Express, eating lunch on our way on a little side street for about 9 francs (.35) – ham omelette & rolls, & custard. At the Am. Express a man took us where we could buy perfume, gloves, & petit point bags at wholesale. In the meantime we packed up Harold & the Am. Express. Helen left us early & Harold & I poked around some more until it was time to go back for dinner. For dinner the piece de resistance was a delicious steak & French fried potatoes. I finished my bottle of white wine with this meal – it was a glorious finish. Since it was our last night in Paris it would not have been right to stay in. Some went to hear Rigoletto at the Opera House which I wish I had done only I did not realize it was to be a well-known opera. Helen, Dot, & I went up on the hill outside of Paris, the famous cafe section Montmartre. We saw the lights of the city & then selected the noisiest to go in. We ordered a beer & then hummed with them. We didn’t stay very long as we were to leave early the next morning on the 8 o’clock train.
