August 20, 1939 (Sunday) Amsterdam to Rotterdam

Ruth’s Diary

We had the usual breakfast, prepared by ourselves at the hostel. Elsie packed lunches for all while breakfast was being prepared. About 8:45 all of the crowd was off for a trip to the smaller towns. I spent the morning reading some Dutch picture magazines of the year 1936 & getting my diary up to date. At 11:00 George, who also had stayed behind, returned & we went out & sat by the canal & ate our packed lunch. After lunch we walked our bikes to the station. Much to my surprise my leg did not hurt very much. After parking the bikes I took a boat trip through the canals of Amsterdam & out through the harbor. This was a quiet peaceful trip winding in & out of the city which lasted over an hour. At 3:00 I returned to the station – bot an Eng. newspaper & the Colliers. Only a short while after the others appeared one by one much pleased with their last day of biking. We boarded the train about 4:30 & arrived in Rotterdam in time for supper at the hostel. I also managed to bike the distance from the station. We had a policeman – on his bicycle – lead us into the hostel, through the city streets. After supper most of us turned in early – I didn’t want to do too much walking so as to save my leg for Rotterdam in the morrow & for London.
