Last-Minute Negotiations Fail; False Flag Operations Set Stage for War
On August 29, Hitler extended a façade of negotiation to Poland, but when the Polish government refused to send a delegate to Berlin under German conditions, the diplomatic charade was finished. That day, Jewish leadership in Palestine offered martial support to Britain.
On August 30, Hitler issued the order to begin the invasion of Poland; Polish and Dutch forces launched general mobilizations. On August 31, the Nazis staged the Gleiwitz Incident—a faked Polish attack used as a pretext for war. Hitler’s 12:40 pm order set the invasion for early morning September 1. Britain completed its mobilization, imposed censorship, and closed the stock exchange, bracing for the inevitable.
