Ruth’s Diary
August 4, 1939 We had breakfast at the hostel next door – cocoa, rolls & jam per usual. We then went to the Am. Express & the French consulate for visaes (sic). We then all met at 12:00 to go to the Swiss Int. Exposition. They were celebrating the 650th anniversary of their republic I guess) The exhibits were very interesting – their school systems, pottery making, wood working, the clothes – center with beautiful clothing – hats – dresses, gowns – etc. wonderful – the sports center – with skis, sailboats – yachts, skates, etc.) About 6 o’clock we walked back to a place to eat & had a delicious supper of steak, onions, potatoes, & salad. After supper we ran into Marian, Elsie, Shirley, Casey, George, & Payne. We exchanged experiences for awhile & then parted until Paris. It was rainy & unpleasant so we took the street car home. There were several Americans there so we talked until about 10- (Two boys – brother & one entering Harvard, one in his last year at Phillips Andover). Then another brother & sister whom we have run into several times. It was difficult getting into bed as we could be seen by those outside as we climbed the ladder to our upper bunks. Boys & girls were mixed up in the same room – in this hostel. Apparently, the girls anyway, go to bed almost fully clothed, but it was difficult for us Ams. who undress to go to bed.
