Ruth’s Diary

This was an unpleasant day as it rained most of the time. As Harold & I were first we bought lunch. Food seems high in Switzerland compared with Germany. We get more of a variety, but it is hard keeping it around 9 francs. We finally had to go into the hotel to buy our neat – 4 francs for a pound. It was pouring rain by the time we had finished our purchases so we scrambled under a hay shed – near a manure pile – which didn’t damage appetites any. After the rain let up a little we started out. In spite of the fact we only had about 20 kilos to go it seemed like a hundred. The roads were poor – rutty, & muddy. I was mighty glad to scramble in to the hostel. Harold, Florence, & I went out & looked over the town – & again it rained. There was a lovely rainbow on the mountain side after one shower. We watched a group of bicyclists ride through on the third day of a grueling race. They were covered with mud, but were making excellent time from our vantage point as we were situated on a long grade into the village. Helen, Dot, “Phoebe”, & Tom prepared supper – corned beef hash, cole slaw, cake with a custard sauce – a very good meal. In the evening the boys piled into our bedroom & we played the game where one person gave a geographical term & the next person had to give another using the last letter of the word just given. At 10 o’clock the house father notified us that it was time to go to bed. He was an interesting elderly French man. The people are now speaking French instead of German.
