July 12, 1939 (Wednesday) Arnhem, Holland
Helen’s Diary
July 12 – Wednesday Weather perfect. At the hostel in Arnhem, grand place on a hill up which we had to walk carrying our bags. This morning had breakfast consisting of 1 fried egg, lots of bread and tea. There was some delicious jam and peanut butter on the table and some chocolate stuff to eat on bread. Frank says we must get used to eating bread-there’s always plenty of it. Rec’d 6 letters at the Am. Express-George A., Mom, Rod-and a couple of cards. Got some Dutch money and went shopping. Lunch-more bread, a salad and tea. Frank chartered a bus to take us sightseeing and then to Arnhem. Saw wooden shoes outdoors-wooden shoes on people walking-straw roofs-canals-canal boats with washing out. First stop Utrecht.–the tower and church once one, were separated by a cyclone. Took a picture of the statue of oldest king in Holland. A good meal tonight after which the Am. girls did the dishes. Then we were taken for a walk to the Steenen Tafel, Stone Tabel, where caught a glimpse of the Rhine. Then back to the hostel for tea, singing and bed.
