July 13, 1939 (Thursday) Cleve, Germany

Helen’s Diary

Walked from hostel to station-on – off – then on again-it was the right train. Crossing the border was very simple – declared Am. money as a group-that’s all. At Cleve, got our bicycles, which we had to assemble Had our first picnic lunch and our first ride on our new bikes. 15 km. to Calcar. The hostel was very large, clean and bare. Milk soup for supper(egg and milk sort of custard ). Met and talked with an old German man who spoke Engl. He spoke of Germany as a porcupine which would prick anyone who bothered it. Also said that soldiers wear wool and he wears wood but he didn’t mind. The church here is one of the oldest and has the best carving in Germany. Hope to see it tomorrow.
