Helen’s Diary
July 19 – Wednesday — Frankfurt 8:30 A.M. Went on a tour of Frankfurt led by the same German boy who was in charge last night. The tour included: Goethe’s house–saw both inside and out. His family was wealthy as can be seen by the elaborate inlaid furniture. The largest protestant church where a group of men met in 1848 to unify Germany–the Frankfort Assembly. The Emperor’s Hall in which we had to wear felt slippers. Here were pictures of all the past kings, the imitation of the crown and sceptre, several famous murals. .
Ruth’s Diary
(songs/swing?). July 19, Wednesday – Frankfurt Up at 6:00 as usual & breakfast about 7:00. I did some more washing so as to start out fairly clean on our next long lap of riding. We had the usual breakfast at 8:30 my young friend conducted about 30 of us around Frankfurt. Some of the highlights of the tour were Goethe’s House, St. Paul’s Church where the Frankfurt Assembly met, to the Rat Haus & the Kaisershall. In the Kaisershall we had to put on large felt slippers because of the polished floors. All the furniture had a very high polish. On the walls were murals representing important points in German history. Blucher & the crossing of the Rhine, another showed Bismarck & Moltkew (?) arranging the peace terms in 1870, 1871. Talked with a young fellow, apparently an ardent Nazi, from Danzig. Helen danced with a fellow from (Dudefen?). We also saw some of the old houses of Frankfurt & then we walked along the Main. Helen, Dot & I, at the end of the tour, went to find a place to eat. We didn’t have any idea what we were ordering but we pointed to the cheapest thing on the menu. We got a very delicious soup & then a huge platter of fried potatoes &”wurst” sliced with pickles for 80 pfennig. After lunch we did a lot of window shopping. I had my pictures taken for my French visa & bought 2 films. We then wandered back to the hostel, had a nap before supper. We found Marian’s group at the hostel – their group being more musical & more peppy added to the evening’s fun by singing. “We Were Shipwrecked on the Mary Jane” &”Johnny (Smoker?)” & then dancing the Paw Paw Patch. We got a great deal of applause. The evening ended the same way as the night before only with a larger group we had a much better job of our song – this time we sang Swing Low Sweet Chariot.
