Ruth’s Diary
July 20, Thursday, warm We got away from Frankfurt about 8:30. The valve in my front tire went wrong so that delayed us. The ride from Frankfurt to (Mine?) was one of our best as we stayed together as a group & rode leisurely so that it was fun and we could enjoy it & take in so much more. We bought our lunch – bread, cheese, wurst, tomatoes, bananas, peaches, pastry in Darmstadt & then went outside of the city to eat. We ate by the roadside under a tree by a potato patch in the town of (Lee Heine?). We started on again after lunch & then got some milk in a farm house. Total cost 8 m 30 pf.
We arrived in Worms about 2:30. The hostel was in the basement of a school. We got washed – rested until 4 & then Florence and I went out to see the town. We went in an old Cath. ch – then to a lovely park & saw Luther’s monument, & another very ancient church, the remains of an old Roman wall. We met a young fellow who offered to escort us around. He was in business. He revealed quite a bit of discontent – in that he had not had meat for 4 weeks, was allowed only 1/4 lb. of butter a week. He was quite certain that Germany would take Danzig & that there would be war. He said that everyone said “me too on war” (?). We were sorry that we had to leave him a hurry back to supper. We ate in a missions hospital – soup – eggs (2), potatoes, salad, mint tea. After supper we walked home & willingly went to bed.
