Ruth’s Diary
July 27, Thursday – Munich We had the usual breakfast together, all of us, at 8:30 a.m. We then went down to the American Express where we cashed the last of my marks. From there we went to the British Consulate to get British visas. It was almost 11:30 before we finished so we walked down towards the famous clock, Glochenspiel, while we were waiting. We bought rolls, cheese, & pastry for our lunch. We saw the clock & the figures perform – I think it was a little disappointing. We then found a “joint” & took our food in to eat. We had an address for braid which we looked up after lunch. They were very nice to us & between three of us we bought a lot of braid for belts. We shopped until 4 – Helen & I buying sweaters in a sport shop. At 4 we went in a cafe shop & had coffee and pastry. Got returned to the room & Helen & I did more shopping. I bought a doll for Mr. Hobbs. We then found another braid shop & then shop. There we were thrilled to pieces, the things were so pretty & so reasonable. I spent 12 marks in that one place. We then went back to the room & since it was pouring decided to eat downstairs: breaded veal cutlet, potatoes, salad. We had planned to go in town to see a concert which was to be given in the costumes of Frederick the Great but it would only be given if it didn’t rain, so that was off. We spent so much time shopping in Munich that we missed the things that we should have seen — the Deutsches Museum, the New Art Gallery, etc. I was disappointed, but perhaps there will be another time.
